Marriage Appropriation

I’m finding a lot of parallels between the people who are against same-sex marriage, and the people who are against cultural appropriation.

Both groups say they want to preserve a tradition that has special meaning to them. Both groups claim a kind of ownership for these traditions and want to preserve the original meaning behind them.

Religious conservatives say that marriage is a religious institution meant to be a union between men and women. They do not want gays to ‘appropriate’ marriage for use in a way it was not originally intended. They say that same-sex marriage harms traditional marriage and insults people who view marriage as a religious institution.

People of certain cultural backgrounds do not want their cultural items to be used by people who are not part of their cultural group and were not meant to use them. They say that cultural appropriation harms their culture and it is an insult towards people of that culture.

Personally I don’t think anyone owns marriage and no one owns culture. These things are there for all to share and participate in.

If a person is transethnic can they wear cultural items from that ethnicity?

For example can a white girl who identifies as Indian wear a bindi? Or if a white guy identifies as Native American, can he wear a headdress?

Accusing someone of cultural appropriation is racist. You are basically saying that they can’t wear something or style their hair in a certain way because their skin is the wrong color.

Discrimination based on skin color is the essence of racism.

This is cultural appropriation

One day little Billy wears a hat to school. The next day he notices little Jimmy wearing the same hat. Now if little Billy is a person of substance and character, he might say something like “Hey Jimmy, I like your hat, it looks good on you.” However if Billy is a whiny bitch he might say “You can’t wear a hat, I was wearing a hat first! Wah wah wah!”

snowyowlwhitecotton confirms black people can indeed be racist.

johncory9mm    Is that black girl wearing the warbonnet promoting racism?

snowyowlwhitecotton  she is yes (if she is not from a tribe that using warbonnets and earned it) and you are too by posting it.

Race and hair

It would be ignorant and bigoted of me to tell blacks that they can’t straighten their hair because straight hair is a white person’s thing. It’s their hair and they can do anything they want with it, including straightening it. It is none of mine or anyone else’s business. It is just as ignorant and bigoted for blacks to tell whites that they cannot wear dreadlocks.
